Recruiting Process
Job Posting
All job postings for academic and non-academic positions, as well as apprenticeships and professorships, can be found together on our job portal.
As a rule, all positions are advertised internally first before being published externally on job boards and on our website.
In addition to the requirements and future responsibilities, the job advertisement also specifies:
- the scope of employment, i.e., whether the position is full-time or part-time,
- whether the position is fixed-term and for what reason,
- the pay grade that will apply depending on the applicant’s personal qualifications (Annex B to the TV-L collective agreement).
This does not apply to professorships.
The job advertisement also states:
- who will be the future direct supervisor in terms of professional/technical matters and therefore the contact person for role-specific questions,
- which member of the HR/Personnel Service team is supporting the recruitment process and is available for general questions, and how to contact the Equal Opportunities Officer.
Application
For most vacancies at HRW, you can apply only online.
Once the application deadline has passed, we remove the relevant job posting along with the application link.
Please make sure to attach meaningful documents to your application, such as your CV and certificates/references.
You can find more information in our application tips.
All applicants receive an automatically generated confirmation of receipt, so you can be sure that your documents have been received.
Review of Documents
After the application deadline, we carefully review all applications received.
If documents are missing, we will contact applicants who otherwise meet the requirements profile based on the documents submitted.
Based on the documents available, we make a pre-selection from the pool of applicants, as unfortunately we cannot invite every applicant to a personal interview.
We involve our employee representative bodies and take their feedback into account.
We then invite the applicants who best match the profile to an interview.
Interview
Invitations are sent for the date already stated in the job advertisement.
Interviews usually take place in person on campus. With the interview invitation, you will receive directions.
In addition to the individuals named in the job posting, other people may take part in the interview—especially representatives from the employee representative bodies.
We look forward to getting to know you in the interview—your experience, skills, and expectations—and to providing further information about the university and the area of work.
As a rule, several candidates are invited for interviews on the date communicated in advance. There is only one round of interviews.
For applications for a professorship, a different procedure applies in accordance with the provisions of the relevant regulations.
What happens next?
We review the interview, focusing in particular on questions such as:
- Do the applicants bring what is required for the position?
- Can we offer what the applicants may have expressed as expectations during the interview?
- Do we have the impression that the applicants will identify with the university and the future role?
If the most promising candidates maintain their application, we involve the employee representative bodies in the planned recruitment.
After their approval, our HR/Personnel Service prepares the contract or initially issues an offer/commitment of employment so that any existing employment relationship can, if necessary, be terminated in time for the start at HRW.
All other candidates will receive feedback as soon as possible.
Does that sound time-consuming?
We do everything we can to make the process as efficient and transparent as possible by outlining the timeframes behind the individual steps during the interviews.
