An apprenticeship at HRW means learning an interesting profession and further developing your personal skills.
Office Management Assistant (m/f/d) (Kauffrau/-mann für Büromanagement)
In particular, the following topics and skills are taught as part of the 3-year apprenticeship:
- Secretariat and assistant tasks in our departments, e.g. coordinating appointments and preparing meetings.
- Administrative tasks in various areas of the university, e.g. in the HR department, purchasing, and the finance department.
- Correspondence and communication with staff, students, and external contacts.
- Independent work and self-organization.
As part of the theoretical training, attendance at Hans-Böckler-Berufskolleg in Oberhausen is planned.

IT Specialist (m/f/d) – Specialization: System Integration
In particular, the following topics and skills are taught as part of the 3-year apprenticeship:
- Business processes and operational organization
- Planning, analyzing, and installing information and telecommunications systems. This includes computer systems as well as networks, fixed-line networks, wireless networks, end devices, and security systems.
- Procuring, configuring, and providing software applications
- Professional/technical consulting
- Training and supporting users
As part of the theoretical training, attendance at Heinz-Nixdorf-Berufskolleg in Essen is planned.

Media and Information Services Assistant (m/f/d) – Specialization: Library
In particular, the following topics and skills are taught as part of the 3-year apprenticeship:
- Recording/checking in printed media (circulation processing)
- Supporting library users in searching for the information they need
- Acquiring comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and provision of media and information
- Ordering electronic and printed media and entering them into the relevant IT systems
- Maintaining the printed library collection
Your apprenticeship will take place in the university’s own library. The training also includes internships in other specializations covered by the training regulations.
The school-based/theoretical training takes place at Robert-Schmidt-Berufskolleg in Essen.

Head of Apprenticeship
The head of apprenticeship ensures that the training plan is adhered to.
They also provide guidance and support in the event of work-related and related personal difficulties.
In addition, they are involved in the decision-making process for hiring, in conducting appraisal meetings, and in preparing apprenticeship certificates.
Collective agreement provisions
The collective agreement for apprentices employed by the federal states in training occupations under the Vocational Training Act contains provisions on the level of apprenticeship remuneration, vacation entitlement, probationary period, and much more.
Youth and Apprentice Representation
HRW has a Youth and Apprentice Representation (JAV).
The JAV’s task is to look after the special interests of young people and those completing an apprenticeship at the university. It does so both vis-à-vis the staff council and together with the staff council vis-à-vis the administration.
The JAV has the right to address all matters that are relevant to the group of employees it represents. It can discuss these internally within the JAV, with the staff council, or together with the staff council also with the administration. It is also responsible for maintaining contact with young people and apprentices and for serving as a trusted point of contact for operational/workplace matters.
