Safety and Reliability Engineering
Uwe Kay Rakowsky studied Safety Engineering with a focus on traffic safety at the University of Wuppertal, graduating with a Diplom-Ingenieur degree. He subsequently worked at the same university as a doctoral researcher and research associate in the field of traffic safety engineering.
He completed his doctoral thesis on “Theory and Application of Multi-Valued Models in Reliability Engineering” and was awarded a Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) in 1991. He then continued his work in the same field as a C2 postdoctoral researcher. During this period, he also held a teaching assignment at the Haugesund University College in Norway and undertook research stays at TU Wien and University of Tokyo.
In 2000, he completed his habilitation and received the authorisation to teach (venia legendi) in the field of Safety Engineering and Reliability Engineering, also at the University of Wuppertal. From 2000 to 2014, he worked as an engineer for functional safety at a company in the railway technology and electromobility sector. At the same time, he taught System Reliability as a Privatdozent at the University of Wuppertal.
In early 2014, he joined Hochschule Ruhr West, where he was responsible for establishing and leading the Bachelor’s degree programme in Safety Engineering (BEng) and the Master’s degree programme in Functional Safety (MEng).
Uwe Kay Rakowsky is a member of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety.
