Sustainability

Sustainability means using resources sparingly and responsibly in order to maintain ecological, social and economic systems in the long term. Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences is committed to sustainable development in various projects and initiatives by linking research, teaching and practice in order to promote environmentally friendly and future-orientated solutions.

Integrated climate protection concept and implementation at the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Bottrop - initial project

With the project to create an integrated climate protection concept, the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (HRW) has entered a new phase in the implementation of its Vision 2030 and the strategic goals of the University Development Plan 2026. As a young state university with campuses in the cities of Mülheim an der Ruhr and Bottrop, HRW was founded in 2009 with the mission of promoting structural change in the Ruhr region. The existing commitment to sustainability is to be continuously expanded. The development and implementation of a climate protection concept will support HRW in making its activities more sustainable in two key aspects in particular. Firstly, ways of identifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations will be developed. Initial approaches from student and scientific projects, in which considerable savings potential was identified, particularly in the areas of mobility and electricity consumption, will be integrated into the concept. On the other hand, the HRW will be in even closer contact than before with stakeholders in the region on the subject of sustainability. Accordingly, it is planned to communicate its own experiences and successes in avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and to discuss further individual and joint steps to avoid emissions.

The project is led by Dr. Tobias Matusch, who joined the HRW in May 2023. And since climate protection is teamwork, Mr. Matusch is also happy to have your support. If you have any questions, suggestions or ideas on climate protection and sustainability, please feel free to contact Mr. Matusch at any time (tobias.matusch@hs-ruhrwest.de).

Fields of action for sustainability

Scientific findings make a significant contribution to overcoming global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and social inequality. Integrating sustainability into research at Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences is crucial to developing forward-looking solutions and supporting long-term social, environmental and economic goals. Sustainable research at HRW also drives social progress and enables a fairer, more sustainable world.

The Prosperkolleg promotes sustainable business models through the circular economy in the Emscher-Lippe region. It supports companies in establishing material cycles and offers practical research and technical testing in a special laboratory.

Sustainability in teaching is essential to prepare future generations to tackle global challenges such as climate change and social inequality. By integrating sustainable topics into educational programmes and degree courses at Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (keyword: Education for Sustainable Development), HRW students develop the knowledge and skills, such as critical thinking and design skills, to make responsible decisions in their living and working environment, to act in a future-oriented manner and to create innovative solutions for a fair, environmentally friendly and economically stable future

Sustainability in transfer as a third mission means that universities contribute their research results and innovations to society and the economy in order to provide important impetus for sustainable developments. With the HRWStartUps and through close cooperation and dialogue-based partnerships with companies, administrations and civil society, Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences promotes the transfer of knowledge, supports the implementation of sustainable solutions and contributes to actively shaping the social transformation for more environmental and climate protection.

Sustainability-orientated action is also of central importance due to the role model function of Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences. HRW is continuously reducing its ecological footprint through measures in the areas of energy efficiency, mobility management, waste reduction and sustainable procurement. These approaches not only help to conserve resources, but also promote an awareness of sustainability within the entire university community and the general public.

Sustainability in the governance of Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences is crucial for anchoring long-term responsibility in decision-making processes. By integrating as many university stakeholders as possible, sustainable development should incorporate the diversity of perspectives and utilise this plurality to bundle existing potential. This not only strengthens institutional resilience, but also supports the integration of sustainability in research, teaching and operations, making HRW a pioneer for sustainable development.
