"Reverse engineering and advanced CAD applications"

Reverse engineering is generally understood to be the process of digitising physically existing objects.

The point clouds, which are usually obtained through 3D scanning processes, must be converted into suitable data models for further use.
This process cannot yet be fully automated, which is why the process knowledge for model transformation is also required with the help of specific software tools.

Very similar processes are also required for the reverse engineering of the meshes that arise as a result of FEM-based topology optimisation.

Within a working group with the participating Prof Donga, Prof Friedhoff and Prof Kesselmans, this knowledge is being built up, further developed and, in particular, passed on to students.

Five workstations are currently being planned, which will have the following equipment features:

  • high-performance workstations
  • Ansys 2020R1
  • SolidWorks 2019 with Xtract 3D PlugIn
  • NX12 with licences for ConvergentModelling and SynchronousTechnology
  • Rhinoceros V6 with Mesh2Surface plug-in
  • 3D scanner Mantis Vision F6 SR
