Prof. Dr Patrick Lagao – Expert in Engineering Product Development
Since February 2020, Prof. Dr-Ing. Patrick Lagao has joined Faculty 3, specifically the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, as the newly appointed Professor of Product Development.
His primary teaching responsibilities at HRW include the Bachelor’s programmes in Mechanical Engineering and the Women’s Mechanical Engineering programme. Additionally, Prof. Lagao offers selected modules within Faculty 4, including the Bachelor’s programmes in Mechatronics and Vehicle Electronics and Electromobility.

Prof. Patrick Lagao on the digital start of the summer semester 2020:
“No one was truly ‘prepared’ for this situation. The continuous support from higher education didactics and e-learning is therefore absolutely invaluable at the moment! I—and this is echoed by many colleagues—am currently spending a lot of extra time creating additional materials beyond the usual resources, such as more extensively annotated lecture and exercise slides, extra solution examples through additional slides or videos. Communication with students mainly takes place via Moodle; depending on the module, this is primarily through discussion forums, or I use the chatroom as an open office hour, and, of course, the good old email.

Patrick Lagao was born in Manila, Philippines, and currently lives in Bottrop. After completing his diploma studies in Mechanical Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum, he earned his doctorate in 2004 with a thesis titled “Potential Applications of Data Mining for the Classification of Complex Manufacturing Processes Using the Example of Radial-Axial Ring Rolling.”
Following his doctorate, Patrick Lagao moved into industrial practice as an engineer. Since 2006, he has held various positions at Mannesmann Precision Tubes GmbH, a company within the Salzgitter Group. Initially, his focus was on technical customer consulting and product development, designing precision steel tubes to meet the requirements of international clients for industrial manufacturing. The experience gained in this area was then applied in his subsequent role as Head of Technical Planning, where he was able to further advance the technical development of production sites. A distinctive feature of his professional career is that Patrick Lagao has always worked at the technical interface between customers and production. His responsibilities consistently included both the development and further advancement of engineering products and customer-oriented consulting.
Since February 2020, Patrick Lagao has contributed his expertise to the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at HRW. His professional experience and deep understanding of the importance of the interface between engineering development and market placement of developed products are a valuable addition to HRW.
