Field of Teaching: Business Informatics
"Expert in Global Processes"
Since 1 January 2014, Jan Pawlowski has been teaching and conducting research in Business Informatics at Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW). Following his PhD and habilitation at the University of Duisburg-Essen, he was Professor of Global Information Systems at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.
He co-founded a company in quality management (Delzert) and led a private research institute in knowledge management and e-learning in Seoul, Korea (Korean German Institute of Technology). Additionally, Jan Pawlowski has worked as a consultant in education and knowledge management.
He is actively involved in several organisations and committees, including the Scientific Commission for Business Informatics (WKWI), IEEE, AIS, and CEN.
- Global Information Systems, especially Process Management:
A global information system (GLIS) is an information system whose developers or users are geographically distributed across multiple countries. This creates challenges in design, usage, and support processes. The primary focus is on the design of processes for distributed teams. The goal is the development of systems and supporting tools and services for globally distributed organisations. - Global Knowledge Management:
Knowledge management requires different processes and supporting systems in different cultures. The starting point is the Global Knowledge Management Framework, which maps the influencing factors and components of knowledge management systems. Based on this conceptual work, we investigate various aspects, such as process design in distributed organisations or the use of social software in inter-organisational contexts. Another focus is the study of barriers to knowledge management in a global context. - Competence Development:
One current focus is the study of competencies in the IT sector. The emphasis is on a comprehensive analysis of which competencies are required in global teams and organisations and how these influence specific skills, such as software development or programming. - Integration of E-Learning and Knowledge Management:
The aim is to integrate learning and work processes. Knowledge management can no longer be seen in isolation but must be embedded in operational work processes. Similarly, it cannot be separated from learning processes. The increasing blending of formal and informal learning leads to new requirements for information and communication systems. A key focus is the design of processes, services, and the provision of interfaces. - Open Educational Resources (OER):
For several years, Open Educational Resources (OER) have been a research focus, concentrating on their use and development. Last year, we conducted the largest study in Europe on barriers to OER. In addition to interoperability, quality, and adaptation, the research focuses on the internationalisation of OER and new approaches to open innovation processes (“Born Global Innovation”). - Learning Technology Standards:
Learning technology standards support the development of interoperable solutions for teaching and learning systems. Currently, we are engaged in two focus areas: the standardisation of contextual and social metadata for cross-system use in learning analytics, recommender systems, and adaptive systems; and the development of educational e-textbooks.
