Martin Schmücker forschte nach Studium und Promotion viele Jahre im Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) an Hochleistungswerkstoffen für Raumfahrt- und Energieanwendungen. Forschungsaufenthalte in Japan, Frankreich und Neuseeland, Habilitation, Leitungsfunktionen im DLR, Lehraufträge in Köln, Hannover, Chemnitz und Berlin sowie Professuren in Clausthal und Koblenz schärften sein Profil in Wissenschaft und Lehre. 2020 wechselte Prof. Schmücker an die HRW und vertritt im Institut Maschinenbau das Lehrgebiet Werkstoffe.
