Person

Hydraulics, control engineering, vehicle systems, as well as mathematics and simulation technology as tools—these have been the long-standing areas of expertise for Prof. Dr Hartmut Ulrich. As a pioneer at Hochschule Ruhr West, he began his tenure at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering in the winter semester of 2009/2010.

After studying Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen, he remained for a further five years at the Institute of Hydraulics and Pneumatics, where he completed his doctorate in 1993. He then spent seven years in industry, developing hydraulic components and systems, as well as hydraulic and electric steering systems. From 2002 to 2009, Hartmut Ulrich was Professor of Vehicle Systems Engineering at Cologne University of Applied Sciences.

The best way to reach me is by email at hartmut.ulrich@hs-ruhrwest.de. I usually respond to emails promptly.

Teaching

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Control Engineering
  • Fluid Power Drives and Controls
  • Digital Simulation of Hydraulic Systems

Hartmut Ulrich teaches the modules Control Engineering and Fluid Power Drives and Controls using the flipped classroom method. Students prepare for weekly face-to-face sessions with specially produced learning videos, during which the material learned is applied to practical examples. The teaching is supported by various e-assessment tools and hands-on experiments.

The module Digital Simulation of Hydraulic Systems is conducted as a semester project. Students work as an engineering team on a concrete, current industrial task.

  • Collaborative theses with companies of all types
  • Technical theses on control engineering or fluid power topics
  • Didactic theses related to higher education teaching

Research and Cooperation

  • Development and validation of mathematical models for fluid power drives and controls, as well as hydraulic and electric steering systems
  • Metrological investigation of steering systems for functional optimisation

Hartmut Ulrich collaborates with various industry partners in the analysis, optimisation, and simulation of hydraulic systems.
