STARTING IN SUMMER 2017: MASTER’S IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Civil engineers are involved in key societal challenges, such as infrastructure projects, energy supply and waste disposal, or future urban development. As societies become increasingly digitalised, and with climate and demographic change well underway, there is a need for innovative solutions to master the challenges of tomorrow.  The new master’s programme in Civil Engineering at Ruhr West features concentrations in structural engineering and construction management and prepares students for leadership positions in a wide range of fields.

Beginning in the 2017 summer semester, Ruhr West will offer a new, three-semester master’s degree in civil engineering at its Mühlheim campus. The innovative curriculum combines traditional civil engineering contents with cutting-edge topics such as building information modelling (BIM), sustainable building technology and bridge renovation. Students benefit from state-of-the-art laboratories, small classes and motivated teachers. The degree programme offers two concentrations: structural engineering and construction management.

Concentrations in structural engineering and construction management

In structural engineering, students acquire detailed technical expertise in structural design. Traditional topics in steel, solid and bridge construction are supplemented with innovative methods of digital planning (FEM, BIM). In the construction management concentration, the focus is on project and risk management when executing construction projects and on the operation of building objects under economic and technical aspects. Furthermore, all students acquire in-depth knowledge and indispensable interdisciplinary skills in areas such as sustainable building technology and maintenance, digital planning, geotechnical engineering, and flood management. Graduates of this programme will be attractive candidates for leadership positions in small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large corporations.
