Applied Computer Science

IT SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

We live in a computerised world. No matter where we go or what we do, we are always surrounded by computer technology. It’s in our smartphones and tablets, automobiles, coffee machines, robots and drones. With its many connections to other academic disciplines, computer science has an impact on all areas of life.

The undergraduate programme in Applied Computer Science at Ruhr West offers two excellent concentrations: cognitive systems and vehicle information technology. If you’re interested in teaching robots to perform basic household chores or coffee makers to remember your cappuccino preferences, the concentration in cognitive systems will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work on these issues. The concentration in vehicle information technology is right for those who want to make driving easier (and safer) by developing software to assist with parking, with keeping a safe distance behind other vehicles, with identifying and avoiding dangerous situations and so on.

Real-world learning
Studying computer science at Ruhr West means hands-on learning inside and outside the classroom. Based on the university’s contacts to industry partners, students engage in real-world projects with actual companies to apply the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in lectures and seminars. In their final year, they complete a six-month work placement at one of Ruhr West’s partner companies. In addition to their technical training, students also acquire communication, presentation and teamwork skills to interact effectively with co-workers and clients.
