HRW currently cooperates with 22 universities around the world and actively expands its international network. The International Offi ce develops and maintains international relations and supports students and staff with study or teaching periods abroad. Ruhr West participates in the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
Technische Universität Graz is one of two technical universities in Austria. With a student enrolment of 12,700, it is a major university in the international research and education network in science and technology. Building on its wide range of bachelor's programmes, the university's focus is on research-oriented master's and doctoral programmes. In spring 2016, Ruhr West entered into an agreement with TU Graz, enabling its bachelor's students in civil engineering to spend a semester abroad in Graz.
Université Catholique de Lille is a private, officially accredited university in northern France, enrolling about 25,000 students. Open to students of all religious denominations, it offers a wide range of subjects. A collaborative agreement with Ruhr West exists for bachelor’s students in business administration and computer science.
Over the course of its 150-year history, Riga Technical University has emerged as a university with a strong national and international reputation. Enrolling more than 14,500 students, it is one of Latvia’s most important universities. It is divided into eight faculties, including civil engineering, electrical engineering, information technologies, mechanical engineering, management, and engineering and management.
In international rankings, Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is the number one Latin American university. Like UNESP (see below), it is a public ‘multi-campus’ institution with campuses in several cities throughout the state of São Paulo. The Faculdade de Economia, Administração e Contabilidade (FEA-RP) is based in Ribeirão Preto, a city of just under 600,000 inhabitants about 300 kilometres north of São Paulo. The spacious campus was built on the premises of a former coffee plantation. In addition to business administration, FEA-RP also offers studies in medicine, pharmacy and sports science. A collaborative agreement enables Ruhr West students in business administration to spend up to one academic year at FEA-RP.
Universidade Estadual Paulista ‘Júlio de Mesquita Filho’ (UNESP) is a public university in the state of São Paulo and ranks among Brazil’s best universities. It is a public ‘multi-campus’ institution with campuses in several cities throughout the state of São Paulo, enrolling a total of more than 47,000 students in about 400 different degree programmes, from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees. The university’s collaboration with Ruhr West is primarily focused on business administration, but plans are underway for expanding it to engineering in the field of alternative energies.
Ruhr West students can spend one ERASMUS semester at historic Opole University of Technology in Poland. This university, which has a focus on technology and business and is divided into six faculties, is strongly involved in international partnerships, providing foreign students with many academic opportunities. For instance, Ruhr West students in computer science, engineering or business administration are welcome to take classes together with about 12,000 other students. Enrolling only about 3,500 students, Montanuniversität Leoben in Austria provides students with a close-knit academic community and personal attention from professors. Lectures and seminars are taught in German or English. Thanks to the high percentage of foreign students (ca. 13%) and the university’s many partnerships with institutions abroad, the atmosphere on campus is very international. Based on an ERASMUS agreement, Ruhr West students in engineering and international retail management and logistics are eligible to apply for a study abroad semester at Montanuniversität Leoben. With its two campuses in León and Ponferrada, the University of León gives Ruhr West students in business administration and engineering the opportunity to spend their ERASMUS semester in Spain. Enrolling about 13,000 students, León is a mid-sized university. Although most classes are taught in Spanish, it is possible to take individual lectures and seminars in English or French. Moreover, exchange students have the option of taking Spanish lessons prior to the start of the semester. See the university’s website for more information.
The University of the Basque Country has 45,000 students and is based in the region’s largest city. Ruhr West has entered into a collaboration with the university’s Faculty of Engineering. All classes are taught in Spanish and Basque; selected courses may also be offered in English and French. Good Spanish language skills are essential for studying abroad in Bilbao. All Ruhr West engineering students are eligible to apply for an ERASMUS semester.
In China, Ruhr West has signed a partnership agreement with the Chinese-German Technical Faculty (Chinesisch-Deutsche Technische Fakultät, CDTF), a project co-sponsored by Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST) and the University of Paderborn, Germany. The CDTF currently enrols 1,000 bachelor’s students in mechanical engineering and applied chemistry. Ruhr West students in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering are eligible to spend their praxis term in Qingdao, work in a research project or write their final thesis there.
The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has signed an agreement with Ruhr West for the bachelor’s programme in International Business and Emerging Markets. With a student enrolment of over 15,000, this internationally oriented Chinese university is based on a green campus right in the middle of Shanghai. In addition to the STEM fields, USST also has an emphasis on management and economics. Ruhr West students can spend a semester at USST without having to pay tuition. Many classes are taught in English.
Zhejiang University of Science and Technology in Hangzhou enrols about 18,500 students in 39 different degree programmes. The focus is on engineering, business administration and economics. Classes are taught in English or Chinese. Ruhr West students enrolled in the International Business and Emerging Markets programme are eligible to apply for a semester abroad at ZUST. Good English skills are required. Ruhr West students at ZUST do not have to pay tuition. The metropolitan city of Hangzhou is only a two-hour car ride away from Shanghai, making ZUST a highly attractive study abroad destination.
Founded in 2007, Aydin University is a private, officially accredited university. Today, it already features nine faculties, two institutes, two high schools, a vocational school and seven research centres. The university offers a total of 98 different education programmes. Ruhr West has signed an ERASMUS agreement with IAU for students in business administration, engineering and management, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and computer science. Depending on the degree programme, the language of instruction is English or Turkish.
Beykent University was founded in 1997 and has about 10,000 students. It is a private university with six faculties, including a Faculty of Business and Administrative Sciences and a Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. As part of the ERASMUS programme, Ruhr West students in business administration and computer science can study abroad at Beykent for one semester. The primary language of instruction is English.
The Eskişehir Business and Trade Academy, a main precursor of Anadolu University, was founded in 1958. Anadolu University was formed in 1982 through a merger of Eskişehir Business and Trade Academy, Eskişehir State Academy for Engineering and Architecture, Eskişehir Medical School, the Foreign Languages Academy, and the universities of applied sciences in Kütahya, Afyon, Bilecik and Bolvadin. Anadolu University currently enrols about 30,000 students (not including distance learning students etc.).
With a total enrolment of 12,000 students, Òbuda University is one of the largest technical universities in Hungary. In addition, it offers major programmes in business administration and economics. The university’s six faculties include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science and business administration. In many degree programmes, a number of classes are also taught in German and English. Ruhr West students in business administration, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering are eligible to spend an ERASMUS semester abroad at Òbuda University.
