Ruhr West has four faculties with seven distinct institutes, which function as competence clusters within the faculties in line with the university’s matrix-assisted faculty structure.

Faculty 1

Faculty 1 is based at Ruhr West’s Bottrop campus and includes the Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Energy Systems and Energy Management. The Dean is Prof Dr Uwe Handmann; the Vice Dean is Prof Dr Marcus Rehm.

The following degree programmes are offered at Faculty 1:

  • Applied Computer Science, B.Sc.
  • Business Information Systems, B.Sc.
  • Energy Informatics, B.Sc.
  • Energy and Environmental Engineering, B.Sc.
  • Energy Systems Engineering and Management, B.Sc.
  • Human-Machine Interaction, B.Sc.
  • Computer Science, M.Sc.
  • Energy Systems Engineering and Management, M.Sc.

The research profile of Faculty 1 has a primary emphasis on practice and application. The Institute of Energy Systems and Energy Management explores issues concerning the transition to clean energy, renewable energies, and e-mobility. The focus at the Institute of Computer Science is on vehicle information technology and cognitive systems engineering.

Bachelor’s students have the opportunity to get involved in research projects.

Faculty 2

Faculty 2 is based at Ruhr West’s Mülheim campus and includes the Institute of Business Administration. The Dean is Prof Dr Werner Halver; the Vice Dean is Prof Dr Michael Vorfeld.

The following degree programmes are offered at Faculty 2:

  • Industrial Services Management, B.A.
  • International Retail Management and Logistics, B.A.
  • Energy and Water Management, B.A.
  • International Business and Emerging Markets, B.A.
  • Business Administration, M.A.

The research profile of Faculty 2 has a primary emphasis on practice and application. The Institute of Business Administration is engaged in interdisciplinary research in applied business administration, special issues in international business and network economics. Research on emerging markets has a regional focus, primarily on the rising economies in East and South Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Faculty 3

Faculty 3 is based at Ruhr West’s Mülheim campus and includes the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute of Civil Engineering. The Dean is Prof Dr Daniel Jun; the Vice Dean is Prof Dr Joachim Friedhoff.

The following degree programmes are offered at Faculty 3:

  • Civil Engineering and Management, B.Sc.
  • Mechanical Engineering, B.Sc.
  • Mechanical Engineering and Management, B.Sc.
  • Technical Operations Management, M.Sc.

The research profile of Faculty 3 has a primary emphasis on practice and application. The Institute of Mechanical Engineering covers key issues such as automotive engineering, information technology in mechanical engineering, and production engineering.

Faculty 4

Faculty 4 is based at Ruhr West’s Mülheim campus and includes the Institute of Measuring and Sensor Technology and the Institute of Natural Sciences. The Dean is Prof Dr Andreas Sauer; the Vice Dean is Prof Dr Jörg Himmel.

The following degree programmes are offered at Faculty 4:

  • Electrical Engineering, B.Sc.
  • Mechatronics, B.Sc.
  • Safety Engineering, B.Sc.
  • Technical Systems, M.Sc.

The research profile of Faculty 4 has a primary emphasis on practice and application. Research at the Institute of Measuring and Sensor Technology focuses on industrial and medical measuring and sensor technology. The Institute of Natural Sciences is primarily concerned with issues such as micro systems technology and microfluidics, including their applications in medical and chemical analysis and in chemical reactions engineering. The portfolio is supplemented by research in mathematical modelling and computer simulations.

Bachelor’s students have the opportunity to get involved in research projects.
